This article describes troubleshooting techniques that can be used to resolve/workaround a number of issues with Acronis True Image software, caused by outdated, damaged or missing parts of the software settings and executable files.

The list of symptoms when it can help includes, but is not limited to:

  • the error "Cannot create database" at program startup
  • various errors telling that a certain device, path, folder, file, backup, volume, version were not found or could not be accessed
  • unexpected prompts for items listed above while using the program within Windows
  • backup task is shown as "queued" when no other task is running
  • program silently does not launch, no errors are displayed (GUI is not showing up at program's startup)

The methods described on this page go from a quick database cache refresh, that does not require backup tasks reconfiguration afterwards, to applying a special cleanup tool used in cases when neither repair nor uninstallation works.

Instructions from this article apply only to issues within a Windows operating system. The article does not apply to any problem observed in the bootable media environment.

Method 1. Rebuild the Database folder

  1. Stop or pause any active tasks: backups/restore/disk cloning/archiving/synchronization. If there is any problem with that, skip to the next step.
  2. Temporarily disable the self-protection feature of Acronis Active Protection. Click here to see how.
  3. Close Acronis True Image window.
  4. Open Windows Task Manager: press a key combination Ctrl+Shift+Escape.
  5. Switch to the Services tab.
  6. Click on the Description column to sort the services list by service description alphabetically, from A to Z. Acronis services' description start with the letter "A".
  7. Right-click each Acronis service and select Stop.
  8. Switch to the tab with the list of running Windows processes:
    • Windows 7 users: click on the Processes tab
    • Windows 8 and 10 users: click to the Details tab. If you do not see any tabs, click More details in the Task Manager.
  9. Click on the Description column to sort the processes list by process description alphabetically, from A to Z. Acronis processes' description start with the letter "A".
  10. Select each Acronis process and click End Process (Windows 7) or End task (Windows 8, 10) to terminate it. When asked, click End process to confirm.
  11. Open File Explorer (Windows Explorer) and navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome. The folder C:\ProgramData is hidden; to see it, you may need to enable displaying hidden elements in the File Explorer options. Do not confuse it with C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) - you need to navigate to C:\ProgramData.
  12. Rename the folder Database to Database.bak
If the folder "Database.bak" already exists, delete the old version of it.
  13. Start Acronis True Image and check if the issue has been resolved.

The scheduled backup jobs are preserved and you do not need to reconfigure them.

If the problem persists, use the second method described below. In that case, you would need to re-define backup settings and point the program to the previously made backups.

Method 2. Rebuild all settings

The steps below make the program re-build its settings afresh, simulating a new installation. This does not affect the backup files in any way and you can definitively continue a previously created chain of backups.

(!) You will need to set up backup tasks from scratch.

  1. Follow the steps 1-4 from the Method 1, get to Windows Task Manager.
  2. Switch to the Services tab.
  3. Right-click Acronis Scheduler2 Service and select Start.
  4. Download the file schedmgr.exe
  5. Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator. A black Command Prompt window will open.
  6. Type the command "task zap" without quotes and press Enter. This command clears up Acronis Scheduler's list of scheduled jobs.
  7. Follow all the steps from the Method 1 again.
  8. Rename the folder C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts into Scripts.bak. Together with the above steps this will clear the list of cached backups displayed in the user interface. The backups themselves will not be deleted or affected in any way by the procedures described or mentioned on this page.
  9. Delete the folder %userprofile%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Acronis if it is present. To open this path, press the key combination Windows logo key + R to open the "Run" dialog, paste %userprofile%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Acronis and press Enter. Deleting this folder is especially effective for fixing issues with browsing backups by double-clicking .TIBs in Windows Explorer.
  10. Check if the issue with Acronis True Image is resolved.

Click here see how to access previously created backups and continue them.

Method 3. Repair and reinstall

If all of the above failed, follow to repair the installation, and if it does not help, perform a clean installation of the software. It would recreate all of the program files and settings, including those stored in the system registry.

Method 4. Use the Cleanup tool

Lastly, if the repair or uninstallation fails, hangs, or crashes, apply a special Cleanup tool to remove the software, install the latest version of the program and see if the problem has been fixed.

Acronis True Image 2017 review: Fast and powerful image backup

It would be quite easy to simply say that Acronis True Image 2017 New Generation is the best backup program; It’s the fastest all-around imaging program we’ve tested, it’s dead reliable, and it sports every imaginable option. But backup in the real world isn’t about feature sets. While we love True Image in the enterprise or SMB venues, its heavy system footprint and cornucopia of options are likely a wee bit much for the home user.

Note: This review is part of our best Windows backup software of 2017 roundup. Go there for details about competing products and how we tested them.

Design and features

True Image 2017 has an attractive interface that’s relatively easy to use—once you’re familiar with it. It’s light years better than it was before a re-design several years ago, but there are still little oddities, such as thin scroll bars with light-colored sliders on a dark background (the exact opposite of the Windows standard) that require more cognitive effort than they should.

Design oddities or no, True Image 2017 is a titan when it comes to features. In addition to imaging your system, whole disks, partitions, and groups of files, there’s a boot-time startup recovery option and an optional hidden partition for images. There’s every conceivable backup option: incremental, differential, super flexible scheduling, pre/post operation commands, email notifications, just to name a few. There’s also a one-way (mirroring) function for syncing a folder to a destination, as well as client apps for your mobile devices to keep those backed up.

Those are just the features in the Essential version, which costs $50. The $40-yearly Plus version offers 50GB of online storage as well as backup of your Facebook page, phone support, and updates. The $100-yearly Premium version ups that to 1TB of online storage plus Active Protection, which checks images and the program itself to see if anything has been altered, to fend off ransomware. Those prices reflect that fact that the Plus and Premium versions are true subscription software—only the restore functions are available if you don’t re-up. $30 will buy you the local backup features in perpetuity.

The Premium version also features Asign (not a misspelling), which signs your backups for authentication and stores the record with Blockchain, an online service and repository for digital assets. (Note that blockchain, or block chains, also refers to the technology/methodology employed—the company simply uses the name.)

All True Image versions provide bootable recovery media with the ability to restore to dissimilar hardware, i.e., not the same type of hardware that the backup was created on.

We run a number of backups and restores with every program we review and True Image aced all of them. It completed our timed small 115GB Windows system backup in less than four minutes, faster than most of the other programs (though several seconds slower than Aomei’s Backupper Standard). But it was twice as fast as Backupper when handling our 48GB mix of files and folders. CPU usage was quite heavy, about 75 percent, far greater than with most programs at their default settings. Speed isn’t a real concern for most users who tend to perform background or after-hours backups. But if you’re backing up a lot of stuff, or from a number of PCs, speed is definitely an asset, and one that True Image possesses in abundance.

On the other hand, True Image’s speed and hefty feature set come with a price: a whopping six processes running in the background by default. While any performance hit will largely be unnoticeable in a relatively modern, multi-core system, loading them noticeably lengthened our boot times. There’s a lot of stuff in the system tray as well. We’d very much like the ability to configure True Image to use less resources and keep a lower profile.

Buying advice

Acronis True Image 2017 excels in some key areas. It’s the fastest overall backup program we’ve tested by a bunch; has just about every feature you could wish for; and offers affordable online storage. And, if you live your computing life dangerously, the Plus and Premium versions offer additional security against ransom-ware. Given the heavy footprint and the expense, it’s best suited for power users, but overkill for pretty much everyone else.

  • We recommend True Image for SMB and pro-sumers, and the anti-ransomware features will be of value to some, but the average user might be better off with something easier and more lightweight.

    • Mature, highly reliable imaging and file backup
    • Loads of features and options

    • Creates lots of background processes
    • Attractive, but sometimes oddball interface
    • Perpetual license is $30 extra for the Plus and Premium versions
